A mixed doubles pickleball game on the ranch courts in late-afternoon light, one player laughing at the net

Outdoor play · The courts

Two courts. Never a wait.

Two dedicated pickleball courts sit side by side with a half basketball court alongside, a short walk from the Ranch. The courts are yours all day, paddles are in the Bag Room, and the only thing you need to bring is a grudge.

  • Two dedicated courts
  • All yours, nothing to book
  • Half court alongside

Pickleball

It was meant to be a hobby…
and then he went and bought a $250 paddle.

There are paddles on site for everyone else.

The courts

Side by side, with room to heckle.

Double the fun (and double the arguments).

Two full pickleball courts run next to each other, so a group of eight can play at once and the next game is never more than one bad serve away. The half basketball court sits alongside for whoever is sitting out, and every seat has a clear view of every line call.

The gear

Grab your paddle on the way out.

Paddles and balls are in the “Bag Room” with the rest of the equipment. Bring your own if it cost more than the green fee. Grab a towel, pick a partner, and settle the order of play before anyone gets ideas about mixed doubles.

Pickleball

Waggle Dance Ranch — preferred by 9 out of 10 pickleball couples.
(But please don’t ask them, as they are currently not speaking to each other.)

Partners rotate. Feelings do not.

House rules

Keep it friendly.
Ish.

The courts are the most competitive acre on the property after the penalty spot. A few rules keep the peace long enough to get to dinner.

Still level at sunset? Penalty kicks settle it.

Court rules

  1. Call your own linesThen defend them. Out calls are made by the side the ball lands on, out loud, immediately.
  2. The kitchen is not a suggestionNo volleys from inside the seven-foot line. Feet count, momentum counts, and so does the person watching from the bench.
  3. Score out loud, every serveServer’s score, receiver’s score, server number. Forget it once and your partner calls it for the rest of the weekend.
  4. Partners rotateNew pairings every game. Mixed doubles is voluntary until somebody makes it personal.
  5. The $250 paddle gets no special treatmentSame rules, same lines, same result. It just costs more when it hits the fence.
  6. Losers bring the next roundDrinks, towels, and a gracious handshake at the net. The handshake is optional. The drinks are not.

Pickleball

“He says he’s a 3.7 now.
I have no idea what happened to the other 96.3.”

Good news: the Jacuzzi seats seven.

Make a day of it

After the last point.

Shoot it out on the half court

A game of HORSE for whoever lost the last match, right alongside the courts.

Cool off on the Hurly Burly

Seven hundred feet of slip n slide down the east side, ending just short of the pond.

Heat, then cold

The above-ground Jacuzzi and plunge pods sit on their own private deck away from the house, facing the sunset.

Book the masseuse

Arranged before arrival, for the shoulder that hit the $250 paddle’s sweet spot one too many times.

The courts are yours all weekend.
